If you rode out Millhopper Road or did the Gainesville Hawthorne Trail this past weekend, you might have noted that there was very little debris. Just days after a major wind event, how could this have happened???
The Gainesville Cycling Club has Interest Groups whose mission is to keep these, the most heavily used cycling facilities in the County, clear and ready to ride.
The Millhopper Crew is responsible for the bike lane that was clean enough to eat off of on Saturday morning. On Wednesday, the same lane looked more like a mine field. The next time you see one of Neal Cohen’s crew, give them your thanks! (Sue Bowers did the north side, and Joe Doyle the south side this past week.)
For a couple of years now, the Trailkeepers have mounted a giant blower, and swept off the Gainesville Hawthorne Trail every Friday, so weekend riders have a clear trail to ride on. Fairlie Bagley has a relatively small cadre of dedicated volunteers who perform this important chore.
We can use more volunteers in both of these Interest Groups! If you live in the Northwest (or ride Millhopper Road a lot), consider signing up for the Millhopper Crew. If you like to ride the Trail, and have free time on some Fridays, sign up for the Trailkeepers (there is some paperwork to do with the Park Service before you’ll be able to drive the blower, but don’t let that scare you off!). Sign up in the Members Area on the Me page or on the Ride page (Join A Group).
