Fellow cyclists,
My friend and teammate, Gerry Bouchard, was struck by a car this week while riding his bike on NW 6th street in Gainesville. Fortunately he suffered no lasting injury.
All indications are that the car hit him on purpose.
Below is an account of the event -- I'm forwarding his account in that it may pay to be extra mindful of vehicles fitting the description therein. Circa 2000 Black Cadillac, possibly an El Dorado, one tail light out, damage suffered to passenger side view mirror (courtesy Gerry's thigh -- if you've ever sprinted Gerry for a city limits sign, this comes as no surprise. Although I kid, this is serious stuff). Be careful out there. -RobOn Tuesday evening I was struck by a car while riding down NW 6th street on my way to the Gainesville Gym. I was fully lighted, and I was riding in a lit section of the street. The car hit me pretty hard, but fortunately he side-swiped me as opposed to running over me. My calf and my thigh took hard hits. The car's side view mirror - a big black monstrosity - was torn off the car by my leg and it dangled from the car's door as the driver drove away. I was more shocked than hurt. In fact, I faired pretty well. I have a good bruise on my thigh, but aside from that I am fine. From a google search I can see the car is a circa 2000 Cadillac Eldorado. I can't recall how many doors it has. The car was dirty and ugly. Here's the play-by-play: I was southbound on NW 6th around 7:30 PM. I came to the red light at 16th where one small truck was waiting for the light, and an older dirty black Cadillac with very tinted windows arrived just ahead of me. I noticed the car had one taillight out as I rolled up to the light. I waited for the green light at the sidewalk line. I then proceeded along the inside of the white line after I passed through the intersection. The truck went by normally, but the car was heavy on the gas as it approached. Next thing I heard and felt was the car side-swiping me. The bumper hit my calf and the side view mirror hit my thigh. The mirror broke of the car's door and made loud noises as it bounced dangled on its tether. The driver kept the car in the road's gutter after he hit me and he hit the gas very hard. I noticed at this point that all his lights were off, and I came to the conclusion that the driver turned them off so nobody would see him hit me and so I wouldn't be able to read his plate. Nice guys, huh? I somehow kept the bike steady and just rolled to a stop on the sidewalk. I gathered my thoughts and made sure me and my bike were all OK. I then went to the police station, which was within sight, and reported the incident. I only did so because I figured the dangling mirror might stand out.
