All:

My thanks to JulieAnne and David for trying to track this recent report down.  Sounds like it was an urban myth.  Thank goodnesss.  Better to be that than a serious attack.

I had a "First Responder" (lady fire fighter I think) stop me at a cross road on the Hawthorne Trail and inform me there had been a serious dog attack this past weekend and Life Flight was just as the victims leg was "shredded". At least 4 pure bred pit bulls, all of different color, did the attack. This occurred in the area of, or at, mile post 11. The dogs nor owner had been located as of Monday when this lady gave me this info/warning. Doing the mileage math from the story below it sounds like both attacks in same area.

If you can verify this info you might want to get this out to club.

Ben:

Thanks for forwarding this sad tale.  There are several points that are important here.

In the first place Trail users should always carry bear spray, available at outdoor stores.  Expensive, but cheaper than rabies shots. We are ordering a supply of dog whistles which seem to be effective.  My car alarm siren rig made from parts from Radio Shack and a 9-volt battery seems to work well in frightening off most dogs.

Treat all dogs on the Trail as potentially dangerous, particularly large breeds which exist only as attack dogs, such as rottweilers, Alsatians (German Shepherds), and pit bulls, although companion dogs bite also.

ASO is the right contact for emergencies, but for situations like this the Park Police want to be involved.  352-955-6227 is the number I have for them.  They have a lot more power than does Animal Control, and since the attack happened on State property, it can be treated as a criminal matter under State regulations, which are tougher than County regulations.  I hope all GCC members will keep this in mind and call the Park Police when they have dog problems.  They don't just issue a ticket like the ASO and Animal Control, they can take the owners off to jail.

Please report any dog situation so that we can keep the Trail safe for all users.

Regards,

George

George,

I thought you might be interested in this.  Someone on the
Trigators sent this out.

Thanks

Ben

Hello Trigators,

I thought that being an aspiring triathlete I should share my experience  with other aspiring triathletes. For me, this is something I never really thought about until after it happened.

A small group of chemistry graduate students have been training for the Orlando Downtown Triathlon on October 2nd. Four of us decided to do a brick on the Gainesville-Hawthorne trail. (when it was still ridable with a road bike) We staggered our start times to be sure we did not drag and we started about 6 1/2 miles down from boulware. So you may be asking yourself, why is this person whom we don't know telling us about her brick. I never got to finish my brick that day. After only biking 5 miles I stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of CR 325 and CR 2082. In the distance I could see four kids playing on the trail all under the age of 5. Upon closer inspection I noticed there was a rottweiler with them, a rottweiler off of a leash. (Not that it would! have helped had they even had a leash b/c the dog was bigger than any of the children). I felt wierd about the situation as I was approaching. I slowed a tadbit to make sure I didn't hit any of the kids and passed the dog on my left. I started speeding back to full speed thinking I was in the clear but heard a growl, looked down and watched as this rotty grabbed onto my lower right leg. OH afterward, one of the kids said a classic line to me "Dutchess likes to bite bike tires"

If any of you have been bitten by a dog...personally this was my first. Animal services usually goes and takes the dog and puts it under quarantine for 10 days to make sure it doesn't have rabies. (Alachua county has a high case of rabies in racoons, foxes and bats and since this dog lived in the country this was important to watch teh dog). Well to make an extremely long story short the parks department, sheriff's department and animal services must have conspired against me. I have received little to no help in finding the owner of the dog even though we know where the dog lived. This is because of the following:

I got bit on sunday. Animal services went to the property on monday and left a note saying they would be by on tuesday to pick up the dog for quaratine. If there is no dog, they would fine them. Tuesday rolls around, i get a phone call from AS....the dog was found mangled on the side of the road across from the house the kids said it lived. SHOCKER. AS was given a (didn't know at the time) a false name and false phone number of the owner. Well AS sent the head over to the lab at the health department to test it for rabies. The only way to be able to test it is if it has the complete brain intact....upon examination there was a gunshot wound in the head. So no test and guess what no shot records. Since rabies is 100% fatal I decided to just go ahead and get the shots. No big deal right...until the bill comes. Rabies shots cost (depending on your weight...) between 800 to 1200 dollars. A month later I am still trying to get an owner's name to! pay for my medical bills (they really aren't that high). I even have a lawyer helping out a bit.

I have left out a lot of the details to make this extremely long story somewhat shorter. My purpose in telling you all this is to learn from my misfortune. I seriously never thought a dog would latch onto my leg. I didn't think I would being dealing with a backwoods owner that would shoot their dog and I certainly didn't think that the people like the sheriff's department and parks department would drop the ball in helping me. Be careful out there.

Regards,

Lindsay
