Hey, sunrise riders...No, I won't be there this Sunday morn.  I will be helping with backstage work for the Danscompany's spring production of the Wiz...won't get home till ~1-2 am on Sunday morning...after being out till ~midnite on Thursday and Friday while still getting up to go to work ~515 am on Friday. I catnap when I can.  But, Sunday I intend to sleep in a bit, maybe do a shorter afternoon ride.

Likely, I will see you all that following Sunday 22 March. Yea, I want to do the longer route. Let's ride it once to get the feel.  We've got something like 9-10 weeks left till the Ride 2 Remember so we need to get some miles in, and some good speed and power.  That route can be done smoking hot...flat, few cars, beautiful roads, sprints to the county line signs, up Mhopper overpass, and the MH finish line.  If we do not stop, once we are used to the route, I know we can burn through it in well under 2.5 hours and not drop anyone...it is too flat...just hang on a wheel.

I'd also like to throw out there that we meet once or twice at Le Store and do a southerly route.  We can make it down to the hills around Micanopy and Orange Lake which are the worst hills in the Ride 2 Remember route.  A loop like that would be 40-50 miles.  It'd be nice to get some hill work in. I do have a route in mind and will send it next week when things are quieter.

C U next week...Bob Howland

Hi Everyone, we are mixing it up a bit to stave off boredom (we have been doing the same route for years now!)

Sunday March 15th, meet at 7:45am for an 8am sharp departure.  Count on a 19-20mph pace, coming in at a 19mph average.  We will do 45miles give or take a few (route to be decided by group at start).  If Bob comes out we can do his proposed 51 mile route which sounds great!

See ya at the start line!  Jonathan

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Sunrise ride:

When:     Sunday mornings.  Meet at 7:45am for an 8am sharp departure
Start:      The Chevron Gas Station NW 53rd and NW 43rd
Distance: 38-48 miles
Pace:       19mph average (approx)
  • This ride is ideal for those who are on a time budget on Saturdays or Sundays.  We don't stop on the ride except to quickly group up if necessary.
  • There are usually 10-15 riders on the ride during high season (7-10 during low season).
  • Our drop policy is:  We regroup at all turns and at the top of hills (for my benefit!)
  • The pace will significantly increase during the last 4-5 miles of the ride with surges near 28mph.  Given this, it is wise that all riders are self sufficient mechanically, as some (including myself) are sometimes dropped during these last few miles.
  • Please be aware that the early morning start time for this ride means we ride at a time when low sun angles increase the danger of being on the road.  The route is designed to mitigate this, however it is recommended that you have some supplemental lighting on your bike for the ride.
  • All the usual club safety rules apply on the ride including helmets (yes) and headphones (no).
  • This ride generally falls into the Gliders ride category in many respects.  Please check their section of the website for detailed information about this style of riding.
  • It is great that the owners of the Chevron allow us to use their parking lot.  Lets all remember to respect their property and be careful not to block traffic going in and out of the station.:
  • We all have a lot of fun and a lot of laughs during this ride.  Come try us out!
I am happy to answer any questions about this ride.  Drop me an email anytime!
Jonathan Jones (ride coordinator).
