I'm new to GCC so it's
all just greatly humorous to me:-)
Merry Christmas everyone!
Beatrice From: gccmail-manager@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of Ken Sallot Sent: Wed 12/23/2009 5:37 PM To: GCC Listserv Subject: GCCMail: A-Riders weekend (Final GWBL ride!) Saturday-NORTH, December
26th: Meet at 9 am, depart at 9.15 am on the GWBL. Sunday-SOUTH, December 27h: Meet at 9 am, depart at 9.15 am. About the GWBL rides (description courtesy of one of the
previous participants. I think he may have been kidding, but he still
hasn't returned to Gainesville, and his wife and children are about to send
out a search party looking for him): Some
people have asked me about the pace of the GWBL rides, and if they're as
"animated" as the A-rides can sometimes be. And of course they are
and more. Usually the question is phrased along the lines of "Will the GWBL
ride be really tough?" And of course you know the answer to that
question too. "Would I get dropped and stranded
somewhere between Lake City and Pascagula?" And once again, what a dumb
question, of course
you will.
Well, the GWBL is much more structured than normal A-rides, and are
suitable for any rider who considers theirself to be at
least "glider" level.
The
structure is set so that you will glide out of the back of the
group in a more structured, organized and systematic
way. We will drop you and make an extra effort to ensure that
you get lost. Of course we will give you a courtesy call at the rest
stop to make sure you will find your way home. Directions you will be given
are clear and concise, and are something like this: “ Please keep
riding until you hit 225A, than ride in the opposite direction of the sun,
and you will hit Gainesville before the sun sets, maybe, if you're lucky
and have a tail wind”.
The
GWBL could be considered "winter base" training, but as
you all know it really isn’t. GWBL is a continuation of last
season’s madness with a few modifications (there may be a long
rotation, or there may be a sprint or seven, or a few attacks that will remind you of the Hipp
rides). Indeed, Coach Pfaff has been keeping such
strict reins on the GWBL rides that the past two weekends have seen
consistent average heart rates of 175, with average wattage output
nearing 700
(alias Carmichael). Speeds of about 19mph for the entire
duration of the ride will be reserved when a New England blizzard hits
Gainesville, which
may be coming soon.
And, riders who do not wish to participate in the sprints, or rotation, are encouraged to just sit in and the 700-wattage-guys with the 36-inch-thighs will make sure you will be spit out the back of the group. We may wait for you after a sprint or rotation, but it is safer not to have your cell phone on mute, and wait on your one courtesy call. I promise you will get that one phone call to get you back in the opposite direction of the rotation of the sun. So, come out and try the GWBL ride this Saturday and see what it's all about! YOU will make sure YOU enjoy it! About the Helmets are required on all GCC Rides. Expect mileage to
be in the 50-70+ range with one rest stop. Routes are determined prior to
the ride depending on which way the wind is blowing and who shows up.
Routes are agreed upon by consensus the morning of and may change en route.
Speed is consistent 20 + mph during the ride. With surges exceeding 25 mph
(and sometimes 30 mph). A- Riders do respect all road safety rules, but do
not respect a specific speed limit, especially after the rest stop.
We will often regroup at major intersections before the rest stop, but not
necessarily after the rest stop. NORTHERN ROUTES: Meet: At the Chevron station @ NW 43rd St and 53rd Ave (Hunters Crossing and Millhopper Road) PARK: In along NW 43rd St. Start at the north end and work south. Do not park in the slots alongside the station or along NW 53rd Ave. DO NOT use the business lots east of the Chevron on Saturdays. Overflow parking is along the short east-west street south of the station. Please watch where you are standing; do not block the flow of traffic going to the pumps. SOUTHERN ROUTES: MEET: At the "Kangaroo (formerly Le Store)" on the NW corner of SW 34 th St and Williston Road. PARK: At the end of SW 47th Ave just east of 34th Street across from the big Post Office. Please do not loiter in the parking area. Parking also may be available at the south end of the Publix parking lot. If you park in the Publix parking lot please park as close to 34th Street as possible. We want to keep the spots close to the stores open for shoppers, hopefully we can keep a low profile and not become a problem to the businesses in the plaza. Thanks for your help with this!
