Hey, Wed off-road riders...who are also GCC members,

Wed 12 Mar as you guys passed along the berm on the west side of our Anglewood neighborhood, you encountered a wall of cut saplings and crummy chain link fence, just before you made it to Clear Lake Drive (CLD).

I want you to know that local neighbors have nothing to do with that...here is what I do know...

--the previous "owner" has returned to that property that fronts CLD.  A house burned at this site more than 10 years ago. This owner wants to build a new house there.  He is fencing off berm access that he claims is part of his property to stop public access for liability reasons.

--the berm & retaining wall he is blocking was built by the City of Gainesville just about 10 years ago.  The city maintains the berm, mowing it, doing flood control, etc.  This was well reported at the time...but after the house burned and the CoG built up the berm after purchasing the land, they released the flat parcel for private ownership.  As far as I can tell at this point, CoG still owns the berm property.  Unless the CoG made an unusual deal with the owner to stop public access on the berm, I hope this situation is resolved soon.

--I have requested that CoG Public Works come out and see what is going on...you are not the only ones who use this greenway...it is used by this entire neighborhood...walkers, joggers, bird watchers, etc.  Hopefully, they will be on site soon and this problem will be resolved.

--Wed nite you all did a good job of restoring public access.  But, beware, this afternoon, I could hear pounding...it seems the "owner" returned and put up multiple new poles and chain link.  He also put back some of the vegetative wall. There may also be chain link on the very north end of the berm where it ends at CLD.

Keep checking that location for access to be restored.

Good riding...Bob Howland
