Thank you, George and James!
We all appreciate your helping to keep us informed of efforts to enhance
cycling in Gainesville. As you have mentioned, the upcoming
meeting:
community workshop about the 16th Ave/NW 23rd Ave project on
Wednesday, December 15,2010, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Littlewood
Elementary School (812 NW 34th Street, Gainesville), in the Terrell
Performance Center.
is a wonderful opportunity to show our enthusiasm for cycling and its
improvement in Gainesville.
As the largest group of cyclists in Gainesville we can have a
powerful influence to help cycling bring about a more healthy, clean,
and friendly environment. This would be especially so if we speak with a
united voice which is respectful to the greater good of Gainesville.
In regards to the 16th-23 corridor, there are several different options to
enhance cycling on the route. Hopefully at
our Holiday party- along with discussion of our
latest adventures we can possibly discuss what we think should
be done for 16/23, and to encourage folks to attend the
meeting.
Even if we are not concerned about 16/23, attending the meeting is
important to show our cycling enthusiasm to
the Alachua County Works dept.and to hear what other folks
think about cycling. It's almost like having two parties back to
back!
In regards to the meeting with Bike-Ped Advisory Board, I was
about as confused as I was in an auditorium class of freshman
calculus, but it is wonderful to have some input for the more
vulnerable cyclists and pedestrians, and I look forward to learning more.
Party down!
Jim Funk, commuter group chairperson
PS- it has been suggested that we write our cycling groups on our
party name tags- especially for the commuter group which is so large not
all of us know each other!
Members,
As a nice follow-up to our Bike-Ped Advisory Board encounter the other
night (more on that later from me or the Commuter Committee Chair, Jim
F.), check this out. We'll need to have as many people here as we
can, as, due to its size, this is likely the public forum in which the
decision will be made about this corridor. The cards are
currently
stacked slightly against us, in my opinion, on even getting a striped
gutter, unless the cycling community can get together behind a single
plan and befriend/convince the neighborhood associations to throw us a
bone.
Regards,
James Thompson
Advocacy Director and
Commuter Committee Member

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Alachua County Public Works is hosting a
community workshop about the 16th Ave/NW 23rd Ave project on
Wednesday, December 15,2010, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Littlewood
Elementary School (812 NW 34th Street, Gainesville), in the Terrell
Performance Center. This workshop will provide information
regarding
the 16th Ave/NW 23rd Ave project to interested residents, property

will be provided at the meeting.
The NW 16th Ave/NW 23rd Ave project (between NW 57th Terrace and NW
13th Street) includes the resurfacing and rehabilitation of the
existing pavement, upgrading the existing pedestrian facilities to
meet current ADA requirements, addressing safety and operational
issues through intersection and median opening modifications, and
stabilizing the retaining walls along NW 16th Ave. The project
length
is 4.0 miles.
In order to comply with Sunshine Laws, both the Alachua County
Commission and the Gainesville City Commission are posting this
workshop on their meetings list, so that commissioners who attend can
participate in the meeting.
