Yes,
if you tell Delta it is a bike they will charge you $150. per bike each way. Frontier and others only charge $50. for the oversize box. I ship my bike to a bike shop in Vail for $35. each way.
They will hold the bike for $5.00.  They assemble it and tune it for $15 extra.

My only bad experience was with Fed-X.  On the return trip the driver came into the shop with a pickup number for a Kestral seat post.  Apparently my full size plastic bike box was the only Fed-X package in the shop so a mechanic assumed this must be it.
My (Scott)  bike shipped to Kestral in California for 3 weeks before I managed to trace it down with zero help from Fed-X.
Fed-X charged me for the trip from Vail to California AND from California to Gainesville.  They said it wasn't their fault.

My bike box was clearly labeled to Gainesville on both sides.  The fault lay with a lazy pickup driver and an ignorant mechanic
while the boss was at lunch. I didn't even get the Kestral seat post for my trouble. Next time I will drive my bike case to an official Fed-X or UPS terminal if possible.

Subject: Bike Shipping Cost Question Please

IÃââve never done this before but IÃââm considering  taking our bikes with us to New York.  Below is the rates IÃââve copied from the web.  Am I reading this correctly?  Should I be planning on $150 each?  Are there any feasible alternatives?  The bikes must get there within 5 days of shipping.

Thanks in advanceÃâ Bob
