To all...Bob Newman's original directions are not wrong...whether you use Google Earth, Mapquest, or other mapping sites....whether you use the state park service site or other similar descriptive sites...there are TWO addresses that get you NEAR but not IN the parking lot on the Hawthorne end of the trail...one is 2182 SE 71st Avenue, the other is 300 SW 2nd Ave.  I found maps at "official" sites that had SE 218th Terrace running parallel and a block over from SW 3rd Ave...they'd list the SE 71st Ave address as the location, then have you drive down SW 3rd to get there....my guess is the SW 3rd Ave system is the NEW road naming system and the SE 71st thing is an old artifact.

I've ridden in to the lot too many times to count...driving in from Gainesville seems easiest to take a RT off of Hawthorne Rd onto SE 152nd St, LT onto CR 2082 into Hawthorne's SW quad then zigzig south and east to the parking lot....if you end up near 301, you went to far east, come back west and go south.

This Sunday the LoBees will do our traditional reverse G-H Trail ride.  We will start at the Hawthorne end of the Trail, ride to Gainesville and back.  If you wish to join us we will be going for brunch at the near world famous PJ’s Café in Hawthorne after the ride.

 

Sunday – August 9th:

 

When: Meet at 8:30 am, depart by 8:40 am.

Where: Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail (Leaving from HAWTHORNE)

Coming from Gainesville take Hawthorne Rd. (SR20) to Hawthorne..  Just before going over the 301 overpass bear right at the courthouse onto N. Johnson St. go 4 or 5 blocks down to SW 2nd Ave. and go right.  The trailhead & parking  will be about 100 yards down on the left.  THERE ARE BROWN G-H TRAIL SIGNS AT EACH TURN.  You can’t miss it (if you do, call me).

 

Expect 31 miles at about 15 MPH on the flats. 

As always: helmets are mandatory, mirrors are recommended.
