Tomorrow's Haile ride is going to be a
Time Trial / Team Time Trial edition. Since I went down
in the R2R crash last weekend, I'm without a normal road helmet, so I'm
breaking out the aero helmet & aero bike. Which means...Haile Time
Trial! SO here's the general plan, we ride out to
the Archer TT course, do a self timed TT of either 9 or 13 miles and then
ride back to Haile Publix. This is self timed, so if a car is coming up on
you when you're at the turn around...let the car pass & simply deduct
10, 20, 60 seconds from your time (whatever you feel is right). Also, don't
feel like doing all that suffering alone...talk a friend (or two, or three)
into doing a TTT (Team Time Trial). Go as aero as
you wanna go. It's just you against your own clock. You can share your time
or keep it secret. It's all up to you. Let's meet
at Alligator Island Optical (next to Haile Publix on 91st
street) Meet 6pm, roll out at 6:05 Distance: approx. 35
miles (depending on what you choose) Speed: That's entirely up to
you! (the ride to and from the course will be relaxed / warm up
pace) Since I'm doing this ride TT
style due to my current lack of a normal helmet, I'm going to step on my
soapbox for a second (so stop reading if you'd
like): If you went down in that (or any) crash -
get a new helmet. Helmet manufacturers suggest replacing your helmet once
every 3 years or 1 crash whichever comes first. Even if you crashed and
can't see any damage, you might have compromised the structural foam
underneath the outer shell. As for the 3 year time line...your helmet is
made up of foam. UV rays break down foam. We live in Florida where just
about every ride you get lots of UV
exposure. Sure, if you crash on a "damaged"
helmet, you might not hit that exact spot of compromised foam and you might
be fine...but do you want to take that chance? What's your head
worth? OK, I'm off my soapbox. I
hope to see you tomorrow
night!
