National Weather Service Jacksonville

Significant Severe Weather Incident Overnight

April 2, 2009

National Weather Service - Jacksonville conducted a briefing on the high potential for a severe weather incident this afternoon and more so, overnight. They are concerned that conditions are developing into what is likely to be a significant severe weather outbreak.

NWS Jax stated that the conditions forming are very similar to those in the Midwest severe storms: long lived rotating super cells that can produce long lived tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the whole Southeastern United States under a MODERATE RISK for severe weather. This, according to NWS Jax, is very rare. This means we have a 15% chance of tornadic activity (also rare) and a 30% chance of hail and strong winds.

The weather event is likely to be in two phases: thunderstorm development later this morning into afternoon (11 AM - 7 PM) due to daytime heating followed by a lull. Then a squall line is expected to move through the area around 9 PM overnight until 6 AM.

During this time, severe weather is expected. Continued monitoring of the situation is highly recommended.

I would also advise you review the NWS Jax online weather web briefing at:

Please share this information with your personnel, particularly those agencies with overnight shifts.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

·         Alachua County is under Flood Watch until Friday Morning

·        Alachua County is under Tornado Watch until 3 PM today (subject to extension)

·        We have a moderate risk of severe weather (a rarity in our area)

·        15% of tornadic activity associated with the systems (very high)

·        30% chance of hail and high winds (also high)overnight

·        Additional system passing through on Sunday
