Airlines will charge a minimum of $100 each way, plus an additional luggage charge if you are over the allotted amount of baggage. In most full size bike travel cases, only the wheels, seat post,  need to be removed ... maybe the pedals, too, depending on the size of the specific case. You should not need a mechanic to get your bike ready to ride upon arrival. Usually not even the fine adjustments are affected.

Alternately, look for a LBS or someone you know locally at your destination that can receive a FedEx shipment and send your bike in the case that way. It will cost you less than half the amount of the airline and many times less hassle .... and LOTS safer.

Let me know if you have any specific questions as I have shipped and traveled with bike several times.

Bob,

I read this email with interest, as my wife and I are traveling from Gainesville to Austin, TX for the Lance Armstrong Foundation LiveStrong event in late October. Having never traveled with a bike, our initial thought was to rent bikes while in Austin for the event. However, we would rather take our bikes if feasible and the fact that the GCC has cases might make it so.

Do you have any notion on how much airlines charge to check bike cases? And is it feasible for a novice mechanic to disassemble and reassemble a bike?

I apologize for the novice questions! :)

Thanks,
Tucker

I wanted to express the club’s sincere appreciation to Jorge  Milanes for his donation of a bike travel case to the Gainesville Cycling Club for member use.  This brings to three the amount of travel cases available.

Thanks again Jorge.
