To all:
I was at <unnamed> bike shop a couple
of hours south of Gainesville and was drawn into a conversation with the
owner. <unnamed> medical center, local to the shop,
allegedly has a program through their recreational therapy/ occupational
therapy departments to fix combat wounded veterans, (specifically
amputees), up with information, training/retraining and, when needed, some
financial assistance in obtaining bikes, trikes, arm crank bikes, etc., as
appropriate to their ability to balance and operate a bicycle. Some
limited research suggests that none of the Gainesville health care
facilities have a similar program running at this time. Anyone
know a rehab program or non-governmental veteran group that offers some
combination of training, bike advice, sizing, group rides and perhaps
financial assistance that is accessible to combat wounded veterans in the
immediate Gainesville area? I have already done a cursory review of
the local medical facilities providing care for our veterans and have been
introduced to many valuable programs but not one for
bicycles.
If there is no such program in area... Well,
at least I know what the next step is!
