The Gainesville Cycling Club will have it's best picnic of the year,
the famous Chilly Chili picnic at Oleno State Park on Saturday, Jan. 29,
2011. There is something for everyone at Oleno. You can
hike or off-road bike on the gentle and historic trails. There
is a paved bike path that goes from Oleno to Itchetucknee and on the
Suwannee River (27 miles), and of course, quiet country roads.
The highlight of the day is the Chili Contest, in which Club members
bring exotic chili's to complement the large pot of mild and inoffensive
chili that the Club provides. Club members are asked to bring a side
dish such as a salad, desert or yummy cornbread.
If you have a small portable stove, such as a Coleman Camping stove,
it would be helpfull for re-heating chili.
Rain or shine, we will eat at about 12:00 noon. During the
15 years we have had this picnic, on three occasions, the weather was so
bad (rain or below freezing) no one showed up to ride bikes, however a
large crowd arrived at noon to feast on chili and then hike on Oleno's
trails.
Ride leaders should plan rides for the picnic. Please bring
friends and family to the picnic.
Please RSVP on the GCC members site.
Oleno State Park is 35 miles north of Gainesville on US 441.
Entry fee to the park is $4-6 per automobile.
