April 2nd is the date of the third annual "NuNu 5k
race/walk" being held on the U.F. campus. It is sponsored by the
College of Medicine and
the CSCRB, a group of U.F. scientists formed in honor of a colleague who
lost her mother, Mary Lou "NuNu", to triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) in 2008. The non-profit
CSCRB raises funds for research into this deadly and poorly understood
subtype of breast cancer.
As many GCC members who have bought the pink ribbon jersey
know, all proceeds of the jersey sales go directly to the CSCRB, to help
fund research into TNBC.
If you would like to participate in the NuNu 5k, to further help this
cause, please go to their website:
www.cscrb.org There is a race
registration form attached. Dave and I will be there in our
jerseys. If you decide to join us, please consider wearing your
pink ribbon jersey to help us
spread the word. We expect to have a display table set up as we have
in the past, so that race goers may see/purchase/order a jersey while
there. If we can get a number of people to show up in the jersey for
the walk, it will not only show strong support for the CSCRB and its cause,
but will inspire others to support it with a jersey purchase and help to
spread the word. The following is taken from the website:
"Triple Negative
Breast Cancer (TNBC) accounts for 25% of all breast cancer deaths,
is more prevalent in younger women, and is more likely to recur than other
breast cancers. There is no targeted therapy to date, yet funding for
its research remains scarce and thus limited progress has been made towards
the development of an effective therapy. The Collaboration of
Scientists for Critical Research in Biomedicine, Inc. (CSCRB) is an all-volunteer
nonprofit organization created by a local group of young biomedical scientists to advance
research in areas of medicine that are in critical need of scientific
interest and research funding. We are close to reaching our $50K goal
that will establish a research grant to
launch vital efforts in creating breakthrough TNBC
treatment.
Often it is hard to see the tangible outcomes of a
contribution toward basic scientific research, but it has been the funding
of basic scientific research that led to many of the advancements of
medicine. Your participation and support is a step towards a better future
for women - for your mothers, daughters, wives, family
and friends. Please join us in giving back to our
community."
I am proud to say that a man named David
Grissett wore one of the jerseys in a MS 150 ride last October in
Jacksonville, in honor of his mom, who was losing her battle with breast
cancer. David sent me a picture of himself in the jersey as he
crossed the finish line. His mom was very proud of him that
day.
This week, a man in Michigan contacted me about getting a jersey to
wear in a double century in June. He lost his sister-in-law just two
weeks ago to triple negative breast cancer, and when he saw the jersey on
the CSCRB website, he decided he wanted to wear it in her honor:
"My well loved sister in law passed away on 2/16/2011 from Triple Negative Breast
Cancer. She had it for only a year, ironically six months ago,
she was w/o cancer. Two months later it metastasized in her neck and
liver. We were shocked on 2/15 when I received the call to
rush my family and in laws to say goodbye as her liver shut
down. She didn't want us to worry, so we didn't know she had this
type of breast
cancer. We made record time traveling from Gaylord, MI
to Ft Wayne IN and were able to say goodbye. She actually
consoled us and helped us deal with the tragedy and strengthened our
faith. I was googling about triple negative and saw the
race. I wish I lived a little closer because I definitely would
do the run.
I want to use it at The MichiganMountain Mayem on 6/11, a double
century with proceeds to breast cancer
research. I will spread the word about CSCRB to my family.
Thanks again; the jersey will bring joy to our family."
It is because of stories like these that I continue to sell the
jerseys. They are helping to make a difference in the fight to end
breast cancer. Thanks to all of you who have supported the jersey;
none of this would have happened without that support.
Hope to see you on April 2nd ...........in our
pink ribbons!
As of today, March 4, I have several extra jerseys and
gloves available from the last order (#6), if anyone is interested in
one. Also, Raleigh at Chain Reaction will be selling the
jerseys. Currently, they are on display at Chain Reaction, Super Cool
Bike Shop, and Bike Works.
thanks!
