Jonesville, FL -- 23 riders braved the 40 degree temperature at
start time to cover 76 miles of Alachua and Gilchrist county roads in the
inaugural Veterans Day Poker Run. The group faced a stiff northerly
headwind from Archer all the way through Traxler before turning south and
enjoying a wind-assisted run home. In a furiously contested photo finish
sprint, Amanda Adams edged out Steve Howell by a tire width (each with pair
of kings and ace high - but Amanda also held a queen, Steve a
only a jack). Shane Powers was a bike length back (pair of queens) to round
out the podium. Thanks once more to Bike Works for their generous support
of the podium prizes. And the autobus dragged in John Kranzler for
the lanterne rouge prize (2,3,4,7,K unsuited), sponsored by
Alligator Island Optical.
The 2011 Veterans Day Poker run riders represented a broad spectrum of
the local scene: A-riders, B-17s, Developers, Gliders, Haile riders,
HighBees, and Team Florida. And despite the presence of several GCX members
who eyed the many limerock sideroads with anticipation, we managed to keep
everyone together on the pavement.
We raised a total of $250 for the Gainesville Fisher
House. Look for this ride to repeat next year with an
expanded structure to open the event for a wider range of
fitness levels.
Until then, ride safe and support our vets however you can...
