To the list: My suggestion, only if you cannot host
on
the club's server, would be SmugMug. I tried to research a lot
several
years ago when we took a trip and I had tons of pics that our friends
wanted to see.
It is $40 per year. However, with all the parties, etc we have,
surely
the club could afford this. There is NO sign in, no ads, no spam,
nada. Just your pictures in nice, professional galleries.
And
unlimited storage. You can also customize each gallery. I
highly
recommend it. I've had it now for 3 years. www.smugmug.com
Of course, there is no guarantee that none of these places will be in
business 10 years from now!

Create a fake account if you don't want to give your real

promotions coming in from Kodak Gallery, so if that is your concern I
wouldn't worry about it. And I wouldn't bother to sign up either to
view rubbish.
As this conversation goes on, no doubt someone will say. 'Why not
Snapfish?' . Spam!!!! Lots of spam. Forget about it.
Any other suggestions? We're talking $20 here folks. Lets not get
too worked up about it. The real question is whether we want to keep
the old albums available to members, these are currently linked to our
website. So moving them will entail some work on Rogers part too. He
will have to modify all of the urls associated, assuming we even can
move them easily. Basically if we go to another service you should
consider the old albums gone.
Actually, I'm a little surprised they would be asking for $20
based on this particular account, which I use exclusively for the GCC.
I'm sure that people must occasionally be ordering pics of themselves
from the posted albums. You would think they would consider this profit
in light of the overall situation. I have no way of verifying how much
money has actually been spent on print purchases once the albums
are up
and being viewed though, but I'm guessing in a year it is far more
than $20. They probably do not have this business model though, because
these albums are typically intended to be viewed by families, rather
than large clubs. And any good business man knows you should rake bucks
up wherever you can extort them.
The club has until the middle of May to pay this new charge, after
that the albums will all be deleted from Kodak Gallery.

I too find the "Create an Account" coercion unacceptable -- I
don't return to sites which require it.
However, I think it's necessary to balance the $20 cost against
the cost of moving said files.
Some of those sites don't make it easy --- even for the owner --
to retrieve their data once it's uploaded.

Can’t
this
be hosted on the GCC website which we already pay for hosting services?
I know there is work involved in moving the images over but services
like this and many other FREE internet services are going to start this
kind of process to recoup costs for Data Center expenses. If we have
our own pages serving the club photo history we are free to move them
to any service provider we want simply by moving the folder structure.
This would also eliminate the annoying “Create an Account” to
view
rubbish.
My two cents
worth.

Note the following missive from Kodak
Gallery, the current repository for the clubs photos from past events.
This previously free service is now going to be $20 per year. This is a
small expense for the club against the loss of the clubs history in
photos.
If anyone has any opposition to this
continued service to the club, you should bring it up at the next board
meeting. Otherwise I will assume the $20 will be
forthcoming.
Considerable work and many hours have gone in
to the uploading, sorting, titling, arranging and notification process
associated with these archival photos at Kodak Gallery. I will not be
repeating that process on previously worked photos at another photo
presentation website. I suspect that any other currently free photo
service will be similarly inclined to eventually charge fees for their
services; at least once users have uploaded enough photos, and invested
enough time in working them, that it becomes onerous to move them to
another site. Clever eh? The perfect business model.
The outfall though, is that it is a small
fee
given the service provided.
