Gainesville Cycling Club's beginner group (tentaively named the Hokey
Pokey group) will ride the Withlacoochee Trail on Saturday, July
31. Riders whould meet at the trail head in Inverness
(directions below) at 9:00 with a ride start at 9:15.
The Withlacoochee Trail is a paved rail-trail, 47 miles long. We
will be riding south of Inverness and stop in Floral City, which has a
gormet coffee shop, and Irish pub and a bike shop that specializes in
recumbent bikes. Inverness has a used bookstore and a wonderful
thrift shop.
The Withlacoochee Trail is perfect for novice riders. It's
paved, there are no cars, and it would be real hard to get lost.
The ride will be chaperoned by the ride leader who will ride at the
back of the group to make sure no one gets lost. The ride leader is
also a bicycle mechanic who can help fix flat tires and help with any other
mechanical problems.
Following the ride, the group may gather at a local restaurant for
lunch.
Directions to the Withlacoochee Trail: From Gainesville,
go south on Williston Road (State Road 121). In Williston, turn right
at the big intersection and continue on SR 121, which will turn left along
with US 41. Continue south on US 41 (SR 121 will turn right about 2 miles
south of Williston). Continue south on US 41 to Invereness.
There may be a giant pink elephant (it might be gone) on the left side
of the road about 2 miles outside of Inverness.
If you head through Inverness on US 41 you will see the courthouse on the
north side of the road. If you go around the courthouse and head up N.
Apopka Ave, you will run in to the bike trail in about a half mile. The Trail Head building and
parking lot will be on your left at the trail. If you
have questions, please E-mail me.
