Great news! A new
bicycle
trail is now available, thanks to the Alachua County Parks
staff and
volunteer efforts:
- Description: This unpaved
trail,
which goes through a beautiful wooded area, is suitable for mountain
bikes. The distance is about 2 miles in a figure-8 loop design. Because
it's
non-technical, it's suitable for families, although it does include one
challenging hill. Because it's wide, both cyclists and
walkers/joggers
can be accommodated, although it is designated as a bicycle trail.
- Access:
The trail can be accessed from either Millhopper RD (at 88th ST) or 39th
ST
(at 83rd ST). There is very limited parking at the trailhead at the end
of
88th ST and no parking at the 39th ST entrance. Ideas for parking include
the
Chevron at 43rd/53rd where many Gainesville Cycling Club rides begin (and
then
cycle west on Millhopper RD); or the Publix on 39th near I-75 (and then
cycle
east on the sidewalk to the trailhead).
- Considerations: There are no
restrooms or water, so plan accordingly. Please stay on the trail and be mindful of private
property.

The county commissioners who were present voted unanimously to
approve
the proposed bicycle trail between 39th Ave and Millhopper Road.
Commissioner
Pinkoson wanted it noted "for the record" that the signage should show
that
the trail may be temporary, because of a proposal for a possible future
road
in this area.
