more information sent to me in regards to this question I asked.

For those in the know....and for my own edification, I have a question about this statement posted by Huan:  ..... We ride in double paceline just any normal GCC rides and follow all traffic laws.

Where and when are double pace lines legally riding within the law, and when are they not?

George:

This is a good question.  The Florida Statutes are available on our Club website, should anyone ever want to refer to them.  Florida Statute 316.2065(5) states that we must keep as far right as practicable except in a series of limited situations.  316.2065(6) permits riding two abreast except where doing so might impede traffic.  Since it is very likely that much of the time you are being overtaken by motor vehicles, and since the law will ask the following driver if he was impeded, and if he thinks he was, you are guilty of an infraction of this Statute, double pace-lines have a very dubious standing under the law.  If there is following traffic I cannot see how they could be considered legal.  That makes double pace lines illegal most of the time.

Yes, double pace lines are likely the cause of a lot of motorist angst.  As a result, a reasonable person would avoid double pace lines as a matter of common sense and self-protection, even if they are careless about the legal issue.

I guess that prudence would dictate that single-file is the sensible way to ride if there is other traffic on the road.  That is what I have always done.  Just assume double pace lines are illegal, and you will be correct almost all the time.  Avoid double pace lines and do yourselves and all you fellow cyclists a big favor.  Not to mention a bunch of motorists, who have a right to "Share the Road", too.

I hope "following all traffic laws" includes stopping at all stop signs.  If so, you are really rare and honorable cyclists, and my heroes.  Remember, running a stop sign is a moving violation, punishable with a fine of $186 in Alachua County if a deputy sees you.  Being seen doing it by motorists, even if there is no conflict, tends to piss them off and raise their angst level.

Thanks for your interest in roadway safety.

Regards,
