Club,
I spoke with Todd Harris of the Alachua
County Health Department, who provides services to Levy County (that may
account for the time lag in response).
There is in fact
an Active Remediation Plan in place for petroleum by-products in the
groundwater near Raleigh. It is extensively filtered for flow to all
retail outlets (like the store) and the finished product has a few
excedances of health advisory levels, mostly associated with
chlorination/cleansing. It is potable and regulated by the State of
Florida.
However, there was a health advisory of an exceedance of
bromomethane, chloromethane, and TH-methanes, not uncommon from a vigorous
filtering process.
The well is regularly
sampled and data are available from the County.
Mr. Harris warns us not to drink unfiltered water from
springs, creeks, run-off, or from any unfamiliar residence or spigot in the
area. The unfiltered water tastes and smells of petroleum products,
so you shouldn't have a problem telling the difference. All old
tanks, contaminated soil, and pipelines have finally and recently been
removed and so the situation should improve over time.
Until then, make your own decision about whether you
are okay with the potable yet imperfect
water.
Cheers,
James
