Mike,

I was driving on SR 26 Friday and noticed that west of US 301 a condiderable stretch of the "bike lane" was torn up by road resurfacing -- the top layer of asphalt had been milled off and it appeared quite rough.

You may want to consider an alternate route to Melrose.

This week’s ride info:

Day: Saturday, March 14th

Time: 9:00am meeting, 9:15 departure

Meeting Place: Trailhead for the Gainesville- Hawthorn Trail at Boulware Springs.

To get to the Boulware Springs dirt lot:

From the intersection of Waldo Road (24/331) and University Ave (26), proceed East on University for about a quarter mile, the road forks, take the right fork, which is Hawthorne Rd. (20), in about another block take a right (going south) on SE 15th St.., continue south for about 2.25 miles until you see the brown Gainesville Hawthorne Trail sign on your right. Pass the first entrance to the park, but enter the second entrance a few hundred feet further south.

Route and Mileage: We will ride out from the trailhead to Lakeshore Drive and take that to University Avenue (SR 26) and head to Melrose. After a stop in Melrose we’ll head south on CR 219A to CR 1474 turning west to CR 234 at Windsor. From there we’ll take CR 234 to where it crosses the GHT and take that back about 6 miles to the trailhead.  I am estimating that the ride will be around 38-40 miles.

Pace: The HighBees ride pace is about 16-17 MPH; a little faster based on terrain and slower on climbs. This is a friendly, no drop ride; we re-group at all turns when needed.

If you are new to GCC and are looking for a weekly ride with a moderate pace and moderate distance, please feel free to join us.

Thanks,

Mike
