Riders Compete in Final TT of Season
Published: Saturday, September 11, 2010 GAINESVILLE, Fla -- On a day that set a record high temperature, seventeen riders competed in the final installment of the 2010 Gainesville TT Challenge time trial series. Having grown in popularity by sparing no expense in advertising and prizes (literally, no expense), several new faces were in attendance for today's event. Each of the riders competed in one of three categories over the 15 kilometer distance. "I read on the Gainesville Cycling Club email list about a time trail, and thought that would be fun since I like riding my bike on the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail, but then when I arrived I found out it was a trial, and not a trail, and the only lawyer I could find was Darryl Tompkins," said Heidi Montauk, one of the participants. When asked about the race, Derek Schanze, while wiping drool from his face, stated "It was a good warm-up and all, but I still need to ride seven more hours today." Series organizer Ken Sallot could only be heard muttering "whew, thank god that's over, wake me up in January, and please don't let the bulls win." When asked about the event, Race Official Doug Folkerth told this reporter, "Really, I'm only here because Kenny promised to buy me a burrito at El Indio, otherwise I'd be out doing something more fun, like watching paint dry." Course marshalls Velvet Yates and Dana Zimmel both shouted emphatically, "What the heck is it with all these darn gnats?" The final results are as follows: "Anything Goes" -- The anything goes category is open to any pedal driven vehicle, including trikes and recumbents. The competition was fierce for this event, Jay Copp showed up with his recumbent with Zipp 808 wheels, while Heidi Montauk, sporting a floral basket and pinwheel while her blonde pigtails floated in the wind proved to be a fierce competitor. 1. Jay Copp, 23:18, 23.95mph 2. Heidi Montauk, 24:05, 23.15mph "Merckx Category" -- The Merckx Category is for competitors on a road bike only. No clip-on's, no aero helmets, no skinsuits. Please note, we made a few exceptions, but what the heck, it's Gator Game Day anyway. The competition was fierce, and these guys gutted out some impressive performances. 1. Ken Sallot, 22:13, 25.15mph 2. David Monnismith, 22:58, 24.30mph 3. Lambert Vaes, 23:29, 23.75mph 4. Scott Erker, 23:47, 23.50mph 5. Tom Idayaga, 25:29, 21.90mph 6. Jorge Rojas, 26:59, 20.70mph 7. Tim Dalrmple, 27:36, 20.25mph "Aero Category" -- This can be a road bike with clip-on aerobars, or a TT bike, aero helmet, and skin suit. There were some scorching fast times, with Derek Schanze lighting fire to the road and leaving nothing but dust in his wake (wake, hahaha, have you ever tried to draft this guy? good luck with that!). 1. Derek Schanze, 20:23, 27.40mph 2. Andrea Tosolini, 20:58, 26.65mph 3. Jayson O'Mahoney, 21:48, 25.60mph 4. Ryan Saylor, 22:00, 25.40mph 5. Kendall Fredericks, 22:50, 24.45mph 6. Cindy Tompkins, 22:57, 24.35mph 7. Amos Audette, 24:07, 23.15mph 8. Melissa (sorry, I didn't get your last name), 29:03, 19.25mph As always, there is a fourth category for the Gainesville TT Challenge, "I want to ride a TT, but I don't want my time recorded, and just go away and leave me alone already, I'm out riding my bike and don't want to be bothered. Seriously, do I need to take out a restraining order on you??" and we had two takers today. 1. Scott Pfaff* 2. Justin Pfaff* * (seriously guys, it was great seeing you today!) Final Awards Were Presented With Burritos Although we only promised that the person with the fastest time for each category would earn a piece of paper suitable for turning into a paper airplane, the fine folks from Syzygy Graphics provided us with trophies that truly captured the spirit of the event. (the trophy) According to Syzygy Graphics proprieter Matthew Staras, "OK, to explain the thought behind the trophy -- it's all from recycled bike parts. (except for the base). The cog is from an old (yeah Campag) cassette, the part holding the cog is a used Co2 cartridge. Attaching the base to the Co2 is a valve stem & wrapping the base is a tube. I got the idea when the guy I was riding with double flatted on the ride, and knowing that Ken's a cheap skate, I had to keep the costs down. Then I went on a scavenger hunt to find parts I could salvage to make into trophies. " Please consider using Syzygy Graphics for your graphic arts needs. http://www.syzygygraphics.com/ And the awards went to: "Anything Goes" Category -- Jay Copp, 23:18, 9/11/2010 "Merckx" -- Jim Wright, 21:43, 5/29/2010 "Aero" -- Jim Wright, 19:58, 6/26/2010 (Jay Copp proudly displays his trophy) A big hearty thank you goes out to everyone that helped to make the 2010 Gainesville TT Challenge a glowing success!
