On further thought, lets get the heck out of Gainesville on Saturday
(too much football traffic, too many bonfires) and enjoy peace and quiet on
the Nature Coast Trail.
So, lets meet at the Trailhead in Trenton at 7:50 a.m. for an 8:00
a.m. start time on Saturday, Sept 11. We will ride to the bridge and
back, about 20 miles total. If riders want to go farther, we can
probably do that too.
The Nature Coast Trail is quiet and very safe. It passes by
scenic farms and an impressive prison. The trail crosses the Suwannee
River on the old railroad bridge, which has park benches, so you can stop
and sit and watch the sturgeon jump. If riders are interested,
we can visit an old cemetary that has antebellum graves.
Following the ride, we often gather at one of the local
restaurants. The restaurants whould be quiet until about 4 p.m. when the
90,000 football fans exit the game.
Everyone is welcome is come on this ride (of course, you must wear a
bike helmet). Don't worry about being slow, no one is slower than me
and we never leave anyone behind.
The ride will be chaperoned by the ride leader who will ride at the
back of the group to make sure no one gets lost. The ride leader is
also a bicycle mechanic who can help fix flat tires and help with any other
mechanical problems. Directions to Trenton Trailhead: Go west on
State Road 26 (University Avenue, Newberry Road) and go through Newberry
and then to Trenton. In Tenton, turn right at the traffic light (onto
US 129), the Trailhead will be 1/4 mile after the turn on the left.
The Trailhead is the old train station. If you
have questions, please E-mail me.
