The Saddle Tramps (Bees are welcome to join us) will ride Wednesday May
25th,
from the Jonesville
Publix. We will ride a
counter-clockwise
loop heading north on CR241 with a mid-loop rest stop in High Springs, and
returning on several familiar and a few not so familiar roads through rural
countryside.
This is a ~38 mile ride with mostly
smooth roads and a few moderate hill climbs. Maps will
be available at the start, but we MIGHT make an
enroute
change to shorten the ride a little if the temperature rises sooner than
expected. Bathrooms are available at the Publix and at the rest stop
in
High Springs long enough to eat a snack and a drink. Meet at
7:45AM for a departure at 8:00AM so we get as much cool
morning
air as possible. High temperatures are currently forecast in the
mid-90s
later in the day, so bring plenty of water and dress for hot
weather. It would be a good idea to bring a few dollars to
purchase a cool drink at the rest stop to stretch your water supply,
and
purchase an energy snack if you don't usually carry
one.
Expect level-ground pedaling speeds between
13-16
mph, and an average speed of 13-14 mph. This is a
no-drop friendly recreational ride; Busy Bees who want to
sprint
ahead of the pack for training are welcome to do so, but
you should expect to rest while we stop and wait for
everyone to regroup at each major turn. Helmets
are required, suntan lotion is recommended, as parts of this ride
are
in sunny open areas.
The Jonesville Publix is located on the west side
of
town at the intersection of CR241 and Newberry Road, both of which have
bike
lanes. If you drive, please park on the southmost (Newberry Rd)
side of
the parking lot well away from the Publix store.
This ride will be lead by Ed Gardner in the absence
of
our fearless leader Melinda Koken, who has now met up with her traveling
companions in North Carolina, and is blitzing up the Atlantic coast at
Saddle Tramp Nominal speed, at times exceeding 12 miles per hour on her 80
pound
bike.
