Greenway needed on Millhopper
Road
In his Sunday column promoting bicycling, Ron Cunningham easily defends the valid role of bicycles in our community. Bikes save gasoline, they lessen the number of combustion engines and thereby contribute to cleaner air, they contribute to health and fitness through exercise, they're relatively inexpensive to buy and to operate and they can transport us to where we want to go. Of course cars of some sort will always be with us. Along with mass transit, they have their needed role. But for the reasons given, maximizing the use of bicycles should be a transportation planning priority for us. This brings me to again advocate a bike and pedestrian greenway connection between NW 39th Avenue and Millhopper Road. The county already owns the right of way from NW 39th Ave at 83rd Street north to Millhopper Road at NW 88th Street. Such a greenway would encourage bicycling and walking to Santa Fe Health Care's responsibly planned development as well as promote bicycling to and from Santa Fe College and any future Rapid Transit System terminus in this growing area. An additional benefit of this greenway would be the preservation of Millhopper Road and its official designation as a county Scenic Road, as well as its being a heavily used bicycle route.
