Scott Erker got this response from the motorcycle people when he emailed them about what they are doing about their problem.

While our biggest problem as bicyclists is distracted/impaired drivers, for a motorcycle rider it is right-of-way violation.  This is also a problem for bicyclists, but because motorcycles are going much faster than we are, they are not as able to take evasive action when such a problem does occur.  These violations occur when a motor vehicle turns left in front of you, or pulls out into your path from a side street (as bicyclists, we also have to deal with cars turning right after overtaking us).

Thanks for your message and for your interest in “Justice for All.”

There are two ways you can help right away.  The first is by getting involved in the AMA’s ongoing Justice for All campaign, which battles a major cause of motorcycling injuries and fatalities: other motorists violating motorcyclists’ right-of-way.  For more information, visit http://www.amadirectlink.com/justice/index.asp, or contact Imre Szauter, AMA On-Road Legislative Affairs Specialist, at 614-856-1900 ext. 1125 or iszauter@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Second, because there’s always more strength in numbers, you can work with a local AMA Community Council -- or, since there’s not one in your area, you can form one, and we’ll be here to help.  You can learn more about AMA Community Councils at http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/councils.asp, or by contacting me at 614-856-1900 ext. 1288 or tcook@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Whether or not you do any of the above it is imperative you contact your state representative and senator and let them know that this accident is exactly why we need this legislation.  If you need help locating who these people are you can go to the StateWatch section on www.AMADirectlink.com, fill in your zip code and we will provide all the ways to contact your elected officials.

Again, we appreciate your interest and support.  And stay tuned to www.AMADirectlink.com and American Motorcyclist for more about “Justice for All.”

Sincerely,
