About The Gliders The Gliders are a group that strives to maintain high training speeds over moderate distances and maintain the integrity of the group. The average speed of our rides generally will fall between 18 and 19 mph. You must be capable of holding these speeds in order to stay with the group. For full information about the group, visit our web page. To participate, you must sign the safety pledge, wear a helmet, be able to change a flat tire, and have a capable road bike. You can agree to the safety pledge on our web site. If you are not a club member, you can print a membership form from our web site.
This is the last weekend for 8 am meet times. We move to 9 am after the Gainesville Cycling Festival.
Basic Training 1. When you come on a Gliders ride, you agree to ride next to your partner in a double pace line. DO IT! Do not “half wheel,” which is riding so that you are a little bit ahead of (or behind) your partner. We’re looking for a rear wheel to front wheel separation of 1 to 3 feet; if you are separated by more than that and are behind your partner, you’ll need to move up. If your partner is in that range and you are ahead of them, move back. Keep your handle bars even with each other. 2. We are using a relatively new procedure to move off the front of a double pace line. The left rider does the same maneuver as always, signaling by slapping their butt and pointing to the side they are moving to (left). They then maintain speed while moving off of the line, and then slow to move to the back. The rider on the right has a greater responsibility. They signal in the same way as the rider on the left (slap left butt, point to left), but then must accelerate to get in front of the left side rider. Any slowing down by the right side rider who is attempting to move across to the left side can easily result in a big pileup in the peloton.
