Â?Conserve by Bicycle Program: Ways to promote bicycling and walkingÂ?
The Conserve by Bicycle Program Study was mandated the 2005 Legislature to
identify ways increased use of bicycles could be promoted to save energy and
achieve health benefits (Section 335.067, F.S.).  This project documented
the number of people who would use bikes for transportation and recreation
if facility improvements were made. In addition, it quantified the energy savings and health benefits associated with increased ridership.

Workshop 4: Trail Building
Friday, October 19th
8:00- 12:00noon break for lunch*** 1:00pmÂ?3:00pm

Location: Prairie Creek Conservation Area
(Directions: Drive east out of Gainesville on SR 20 (Hawthorne Road).  Cross over Prairie Creek, and within a half mile, turn right onto the next paved road - CR 2082.   Take this for 1.3 miles, and then turn right onto CR 234.  You'll cross the Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail, and in a few hundred feet, take the first right onto a limerock driveway (two mailboxes).  Follow this about a mile to the Homestead, and we'll be meeting in the older home there.)

Discuss the practical details of trail building, learn how to use an inclinometer and other trail building tools.

Practice What You Preach: Use an inclinometer, see trail building techniques used, and discuss some issues related to trail building techniques.  
Walk at the Prairie Creek Trail and discussion with presenters, Edwin McCook, Public Use Coordinator, Water Management District; Mickey Thomason, Central Region Manager, DEP Office of Greenways and Trails; and, Robert Hutchinson, Program Director, Alachua County Conservation Trust.
