Please note the
upcoming events at San Felasco Hammock Preserve State
Park:
- Trails work day,
Sat, Sep 8, 9 AM to noon: This month's work day (coordinated by CSO
Board member Dave Baggaley) will focus on upgrading the horse trail creek
crossing and applying lime rock/coquina to the rooty sections of Tung Nut
and Hammock Hub bicycle trails, as well as general trail maintenance,
such as pruning and clearing downed trees. All help is
appreciated. After the workday, lunch is provided. Bring small hand
tools if you have them (loppers, pruning shears, hand saws) and gloves,
sunscreen, bug repellent, water bottle, and good humor! Meet at the CSO
building at park headquarters (12720 NW 109th LN, Alachua, directions
below).
- National Public Lands Day, Sat Sep 29, 9 AM to
noon: On the nation's largest, single-day volunteer event for
public lands, a workday (coordinated by CSO Board member Kevin
Mayer) will focus on installing posts/markers along trails to help with
ride safety and navigation. All help is appreciated.
After the work day (around noon), participants may get together at a
local restaurant, such as Bev's Better Burgers, for lunch at their own
expense. Meet at the CSO building at park headquarters (12720 NW 109th LN,
Alachua, directions below).
The 8 Hours of Labor
Gone Riding bicycle event was held last Sat, Sep 2. Approximately 200
riders participated, including 2-time Olympian, 4-time 24hr solo national
champion Tinker Juarez (www.tinkerjuarez.com) who won
the event. Tinker commented that he didn't think the trails were too
muddy, and stated "When the rain came everyone else slowed down, but I
had grip and so passed a lot of people." He also complimented us on
the great park that we have here, and thanked us for our volunteer
work.
Directions to CSO
building: From Gainesville: Go north on CR 241 and
just after the I-75 overpass, turn right on NW 109th Lane. Go 1.1 miles on NW
109th Lane to a break in a black 4 rail fence on the left (east) side of the
road. At the official state park sign, turn left. Drive past a horse paddock and
pole barn to the metal CSO building. From Alachua:
Go south on CR 241 until just before the I-75 overpass. Turn
left on NW 109th Lane and continue as above.
