The City of Gainesville presented plans for repaving NW 8th Avenue to two transportation committees on Wednesday, and to the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Board on Thursday.  The City will be repaving NW 8th Ave from NW 40th Drive to NW 6th Street.

The good news:  The City will be adding bike lanes to NW 8th Ave. from NW 34th Street to NW 6th Street.

Currently, 8th avenue has four lanes from 34th Street to 23rd Terrace, where 8th Ave becomes a two lane road.  To accommodate the bike lanes, the City is redesigning this segment to two lanes for cars and bike lanes, with a buffer between car lanes and bike lanes.

There will be a median installed in the middle of the road, which in the future may have the street lights, which will allow the tree canopy to grow out and provide shade for the sidewalks and bike lanes.

The bike lanes will continue from 23rd Terr. To NW 6th Street, with a short break in the 18th Terr to 15th Street segment, where on-street parking is needed by three houses that do not have driveways.

This project should begin construction sometime next year.
