GCC Friends,
Next Friday and Saturday, Armstrong, FL will host the 3rd Annual SEA Community Rails to Trails Festival.
I
have been working with the event organizers to arrange tent camping
facilities for those of us coming from Gainesville to attend the event.
They have graciously gone out of their way to make that happen. If you
are interested in attending the Festival, and would like to camp
overnight Friday, Saturday, or both nights, let me know. Tent camping
will be permitted at no cost, with port-a-potties and a
portable (hot water) shower being provided by the local Parks & Rec
staff, because they want to welcome us to their community and the
Festival.
Learn about this area's important place in
the history of African-American Florida culture. Spuds, Elkton, and Armstrong
(the SEA communities) were settled by descendants of West African
slaves who farmed the sea islands along the coast of South Carolina,
North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Some background about Florida's
Gullah Geechee history can be found
here.
I
encourage all GCC members who enjoy and support local rail-trails to come out to the Festival. Tent camping is FREE, but you will need to contact
me to register if you intend to camp.
A small group of us will be riding
from Gainesville to Armstrong, self-contained, to Armstrong. It's about
65 miles, one way. We plan to plan to ride out on Friday morning,
arriving in time to enjoy the evening's cultural activities. We will
camp Friday night, enjoy the main Festival on Saturday, camp overnight
on Saturday, and ride home on Sunday. Interested in camping? Contact
me. Interested in driving out, and willing to tote some gear for us? Contact me.
If you have never ridden on the
Palatka-St.AugustineTrailPalatka-St. Augustine Trail, the Festival weekend is a great opportunity to do so.
Dollars spent at the Festival will help this small, rural farming
community that is very enthusiastic about the future benefits of promoting cycle tourism in
their area. I hope you will consider coming out to Armstrong and the
Festival, learning about the SEA Community's
rail trail, and riding on it with us.
