Gainesville Cycling Club Members (Especially Haile Residents),

[This letter is CC:ed to the County Commissioners and is open to the public under Sunshine Law--any personal responses should be directed to me]

Check out the latest bit of untruth and propaganda from the Haile Associations here in the Gainesville Sun (Re: Archer Braid).  Now that their "anti-crime" approach and lies about their cost of maintaining the trail have been exposed, the Associations are pretending to oppose the trail on moral ground, saying they think it would better benefit the community to build it on Archer (where it would duplicate extant infrastructure).  They continue to lie about the trail tearing down trees (which will not happen).  Probably the worst part of the campaign is they have convinced at least two Commissioners to support a "Haile Vote" on the trail.  This would be like letting mid-town bars across from UF campus voting on whether or not to repave University Avenue.  Imagine how little we would get done if our democracy worked like this.

If you are a County resident and a voter, I'm sure you are as sick as I am of this unprecedented use of anti-cycling sentiments to arouse the anti-government crowd for this year's elections.  You should tell your Commissioners this by sending them a letter at bocc@alachuacounty.us.  So far, only Commissioner Byerly has actively exposed the some dozen lies that the Associations have spread, this even after he spoke with them on the phone about the facts for some time.  The Association reps clearly stated their intentional lies were aimed at rousing people to oppose the Braid.  This is reprehensible.

The Commission needs to know that voting County residents will not forget the carnival of propaganda that this anti-commuter campaign has become.

If you live in Haile, you probably know that even some of the anti-Braid speakers at the County meeting were disgusted with the campaign of lies.  Many of them turned on the Association and spoke in favor of gathering more information.  As a Haile resident it is of great importance that you speak out against the Association's position.

It's time to take off the kid gloves.  Facts and logic are not guiding principles in this campaign, but we can take the higher ground by keeping them on the table.

Regards,

James Thompson
