Michael Steinberg kindly informed me that the Open Streets Gainesville Facebook event link that I sent out in my previous email not be viewable to those who are not Facebook members. This was unintentional. Everyone, not just Facebook users, is welcome! The settings have been changed, and the Open Streets Gainesville link should now be working. I warmly invite all of you, your families, and friends to the very first Open Streets Gainesville event that is coming to Gainesville on Sunday, October 5 from 11 am to 3 pm. The event will be held on University Avenue from Main Street to 13th Street. The total event length is approximately 0.9 miles.

Open streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobile traffic, so that people may use them for walking, bicycling, dancing, playing, and socializing.

The event is co-sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation, the City of Gainesville, Gainesville Citizens for Active Transportation (GCAT), Gainesville Cycling Club (GCC), GetActiveGNV, and Bike Florida.

Participation is free and attendees are encouraged to support local businesses by purchasing drinks, food, goods, and services. Businesses along the route are encouraged to be open and have a presence on the street to engage participants.
This is expected to become a regular, recurrent community event around Gainesville!
