GCC Friends,

City Commissioner Yvonne Hinson-Rawls has managed to get the bike registration (AKA bike tax) issue sent to committee for discussion, therefore the issue will be on the Public Safety Committee's agenda on MONDAY, JULY 28TH.  The Public Safety Committee meets at 3 p.m. , in City Hall Room 16.

I am appealing to any and all GCC members who can possibly attend this meeting to please attend and be a voice in opposition of this regressive and pointless proposition, one that has failed miserably in every community in which it has been adopted, and one that our own City staff have carefully researched and deemed futile.  Let me be clear: City staff's research yielded the conclusion that there is absolutely no historical precedent to support the idea that "registering" (read: taxing) bicycles in any way enhances safety, yields any useful amount of income to be used for building infrastructure, or in any way reduces bicycle theft.   And yet, one City Commissioner continues to push this idea forward....

If any of you are free to attend this meeting, I encourage you to do so. If you cannot, please take a moment to email your thoughts to Commissioner Hinson-Rawls and the rest of our City Commission at citycomm@cityofgainesville.org

Commissioner Hinson-Rawls is the Chair of the Public Safety Committee, and is therefore expected to be in attendance at the meeting on Monday, so you will have the opportunity to tell her how you feel in person.

Regards,

-Ally
