The bike registration item is on the 7/28 agenda of the Public Safety Committee. There is nothing in the background materials or in the staff presentation that provides evidence that a bike registration system will enhance safety, provide funds for infrastructure, or reduce theft.
Instead of only arguing against the proposed registration, I propose using this as an opportunity for a coordinated effort to educate regarding: bike usage in Gainesville, demographics of bike users, how infrastructure is not designed well for cyclists, the benefits of a cycling economy, infrastructure funding, and the relative traffic law compliance of cyclists and motorists. Articles have been written lately about most of these topics and others. Individuals could take a single topic and write a concise letter linking it to the bike registration issue.
I assume the public will be able to speak toward the issue at the committee meeting, if anyone is available (7/28, 3:00PM, City Hall Rm 16). Commissioner Hinson-Rawls is the committee chair.
