Greetings one and all,

I hope everyone is riding safe and practicing social distance out there!

Below the Florida Bicycle Association (FBA) provides their Florida legislative update. HB 971 may be of interest as it concerns clarification of state traffic regulations as they apply to electric bicycles.

The short version of the story: HB 971 basically seeks to see to it that e-bikes are treated as other bikes on Florida streets and roads.

More details below and via the links provided, including links to the League of American Bicyclists legislative activity at the national level.

Florida Bicycle Association Update

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we wish all of our members, families and friends good health.   Please follow best practices and sound judgements to take care of yourselves and each other.  This is not the Florida Bicycle Month we had all hoped and planned to celebrate, but getting through this together will ensure celebrations to follow.

2020 Florida Legislative Session
The Florida legislative session ended with continuing efforts by both chambers to pass a budget.  From the FBA legislative platform, the one initiative that awaits the Governor's signature to become law is HB 971 for Electric Bicycles.

During the post session, FBA will monitor both House and Senate elections.  Currently, the filing deadline to run is June 12; primary elections are scheduled for August 18 and the General Election is scheduled for November 3.  Knowing who is running and when the elections take place will determine off session strategies.  The next Florida legislative session is currently scheduled to start in March of 2021.

2020 Congressional Session
As stated in our March 16 Blog Grounded, FBA continues to monitor the Congressional session and has uploaded webinars and documents from the League of American Bicyclists' National Bike Summit with regards to the Federal "asks" from LAB.  The webinar links can be found on our Team Florida web page.  The handouts from LAB can be found on the Documents section of our membership website, Documents / Legislative Platform / Team Florida.

The League is currently notifying their members to read a letter detailing the potential AV legislation (House and Senate asks attached) and opposition to it being attached to a COVID-19 relief or economic stimulus package; ACTION to voice your position is due at close of business today (3/23/2020).

CHANGES TO SAVE THE DATES
Our quarterly Board of Directors meetings are being reworked due to COVID-19.

Our Saturday, April 25 meeting scheduled to take place at the Northeast Dade/Aventura Library in Aventura is canceled.  We are currently exploring online capabilities to allow for a webinar-type of experience for members and for sharing presentations.

Our Saturday, July 25 annual membership meeting in St. Petersburg is still on the schedule, but subject to change.

We appreciate your support of the Florida Bicycle Association and your ability to endure these trying times.
Please be safe during this time of uncertainty and look to the information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for updates and guidance.

T
ake care,
and if going for a ride,
please exercise caution as well as your body.
