PEDAL POWER FOR KENYAN EDUCATION
A bicycle can change a life. We’ve always ridden for pleasure, but there are still many places in the world where children and adults need to use bicycles for transportation. Unfortunately, in these areas bikes are unaffordable to many families.
Through the nonprofit Grow Against Poverty, a school bicycle transportation program at St. Mary’s School in Nambale, Kenya has been started. Fifteen students whose families subsist on less than $1 a day are borrowing bicycles. Their attendance and academic achievement have improved. Time that students spent walking to school, often up to 10 kilometers each way, is now used for studying and helping their families.
Grow Against Poverty’s project, Pedal Power for Kenyan Education, has been accepted by GlobalGiving to be on its donation site. GlobalGiving has been awarded the highest rating of four stars by Charity Navigator.
We’re reaching out to bicycle enthusiasts for donations to purchase additional bicycles, helmets, reflector jackets, and repair kits. With a bicycle, attendance and academic performance improve and in the long run will help stop the cycle of poverty.
