Science Fact of the Week:
Soil Seed Bank: the natural storage of plant seeds within the soil. Different species have different longevity. This factor is very important in planning and implementing
restoration ecology in term of both native and invasive species. Some species are short lived (such as most annual grasses at 2-3 years) and some very long (like French broom at 50-75 years). Some species depend on an environmental factor to bring out of
dormancy (i.e. fire, extreme cold or hot weather, water inundation).
