Marin County Parks Seasonal Assistant (Open Space/Natural Resources)

Pay: $14.56 - $17.87/hour *Depending on qualifications
About the Organization:
Marin County Parks offers for public use and enjoyment, an extensive system of regional and community parks, open space preserves, and trails. The department consists of two divisions,
the Parks and Landscape Division and the Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD). Our team is made up of committed professionals serving in the core programs of operations and maintenance, planning and resource management, volunteers, environmental education,
and administrative services.
About the Position:
The Natural Resources & Science program will be hiring multiple seasonal positions. General seasonal assistant tasks may include: treating invasive plants, watering, mulching and planting native plants, gathering
seed, working with volunteers, monitoring and collecting plant and wildlife population data, mapping and recording work completed using a GPS/GIS, data entry/data processing, writing monitoring protocols and summary reports, maintaining tools and equipment,
general park maintenance and other tasks as needed.
All seasonal assistants must be able to work full days in difficult field conditions, which may include strenuous hiking and manual labor in rugged terrain, off-trail hiking through vegetation, adverse weather
conditions, and in dense poison oak. Most work will be done using hand tools and will often be at sites that require hiking across remote terrain. There will also be a significant number of sites that require work with power tools, mainly weed whips, and herbicide
in backpack sprayers (30lbs when full). Off-road driving will be required for most sites. Full training and safety gear will be provided.
Four assignments will be offered: (1) Early Detection/Rapid Response, (2) Restoration Crew, (3) Biological Monitoring and (4) Volunteer Program Management. Each assignment will perform the general seasonal assistant
tasks, but the focus of their job will be to accomplish tasks within the specific assignment. See below for a description of the tasks to be accomplished and specific requirements for each assignment.
1)
Two Early Detection/Rapid Response
staff will be primarily responsible for surveying priority areas and mapping and treating invasive plants. Desired qualifications for this crew include a strong background in plant identification and common California plant communities, basic spatial data
collection and manipulation skills using GIS.
2)
Five Restoration
staff will work as a team that maintains various habitat restoration sites. The primary responsibility of the crew is removing or otherwise treating invasive plants on Open Space District lands. Desired qualifications for this crew include knowledge of tool
handling and maintenance, navigating across remote terrain, plant identification, thorough data collection skills and ability to work well as part of a team.
3)
Two Biological Monitoring staff will complete various monitoring, surveying, and mitigation tasks related to wildlife inventory and protection. Tasks may include conducting bird nesting surveys,
assisting with the Marin Wildlife Picture Index Project, conducting burrow surveys, turtle/bat/fish monitoring, assisting with protocol and monitoring development for certain wildlife species, wildlife habitat restoration, and general wildlife habitat surveys.
Desired qualifications include bird identification, experience conducting bird surveys, experience conducting other wildlife surveys/monitoring, wildlife identification, and experience performing wildlife-related survey protocols.
4)
One Volunteer Program Management
seasonal staff member will provide support for Volunteer Coordinators at outreach and service events, lead small volunteer programs, help coordinate ongoing environmental stewardship efforts, and other outreach duties as assigned. This position will also
work closely with Natural Resources staff to develop the native plant nursery program and may participate in a variety of natural resource projects.
Desired qualifications for this assignment include previous experience managing volunteers, coordinating volunteer events, and comfort with public speaking. Experience with plant identification,
knowledge of Bay Area plant communities, and experience with seed collection and/or native plant propagation are beneficial, but not required.

Staff will be stationed at one of our offices in San Rafael, California: the Marin Civic Center (3501 Civic Center Drive, Suite 260) or our Lucas Valley field office (18 Jeanette Prandi Way). Work will usually be done in the field at our
34 preserves throughout Marin County, with some work in our parks.
