programs aim to restore and protect the integrity of the natural and cultural resources throughout the Park while building communities, both human and ecological. We believe it is the synergy between these elements that creates passionate and informed citizens invested in the health and future of parklands while engaging a broad constituency in support of public land. Our Restoration Team assesses the ecological needs of Park Stewardship sites and works to restore habitats for the rare species that they support.

 

Position Overview

The Assistant Project Coordinator will be the field lead for the Coastal Bluffs site and support for other San Francisco field sites (Fort Funston and Lands End).  The Coastal Bluffs are composed of primarily serpentine cliffs and valleys which support a host of rare species as well as two federally listed endangered species of manzanita. The trails that run through the site and the beaches below are extremely popular destinations for park visitors. This position will be primarily in the field doing hands-on stewardship activities at the Coastal Bluffs but will assist at other Park Stewardship sites as needed. This position is a member of a thriving, collaborative park-wide team. The Assistant Project Coordinator will report to a Park Stewardship Restoration Manager.

 

Description of Duties

Ecological and Technical Leadership

o   Assists the Restoration Manager and NPS biologist with setting restoration goals based on current site needs and annual work plans

o   Implement restoration work goals (planting, invasive species removal, herbicide work, social trail decommissioning, fence installation, monitoring, maintenance) on the Coastal Bluffs

o   Assist with field work at other Park Stewardship sites as needed

o   Manage, and serve as liaison to contactors and restoration technicians that support restoration work

o   Communicate restoration work goals to restoration technicians, contractors, volunteers, and interns. Assess and quality check work performed.

 

Education and Communication

 

Administration

o   Maintain herbicide kits, tools, and tool-room in collaboration with other Park Stewardship staff and interns

o   Maintain power tools as needed

o   Update work plans, review work performed reports, assist in planning work days

o   Attend relevant meetings as directed by supervisor

o   Assist with responsibility for GSA trucks, ensuring that they receive proper maintenance and contain needed documents

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

o   Scientific: Is knowledgeable about habitat conservation, native habitat restoration, ecological monitoring, and plant communities of the San Francisco area and able to identify native and invasive vegetation to species.

o   Quality: Demonstrates attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness. Strong organizational skills and enjoyment of detail-oriented work including data quality control and office management tasks, including meeting coordination, budget tracking, and administrative support.

o   Productivity: Effective when working independently with little or no supervision. Completes work in timely manner; strives to increase productivity; works quickly.

Certifications

o   Qualified Applicator’s Certificate a plus; desire to obtain a certificate a must

o   Experience with power tools such as weed whips a plus

o   Chainsaw certification preferred; ability, and willingness to obtain required

 

Computer Skills 

o   Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher, knowledge of Adobe Suite and Google applications preferred.

o   Proficient in the use of GIS applications and GPS data collection. Knowledge of other spatial data programs including CalFlora Weed Manager a plus.

o   Valid Driver’s License required
