The Invasive Species Program at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is hiring three Scientific Aids to work April-October on our invasive watersnake project near Sacramento. Job duties include:

  • Conduct surveys and trapping for non-venomous, invasive watersnakes at sites of interest within the Sacramento Valley. This includes entering shallow to waist-deep streams, ponds, and wetlands to retrieve and check traps daily; correctly identifying Nerodia species; hand-removal of live snakes from traps and transference to snake containment bags; collection and entry of data on snake length, weight, and sex, trap success, and biological and ecological site variables; transporting captures to UC-Davis campus for surrender to University collaborators.
  • Assist and coordinate with Department staff and project collaborators to acquire, clean, repair, deploy, remove, and transport traps among sites, facilities, and storage.
  • When in the absence of Program staff oversight, provide leadership to trained volunteers assisting with trapping efforts.
  • Assist with field activities to monitor for or remove other invasive species.
