The California Dept. of Pesticide Regulation, part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, has
an opening for an Environmental Scientist. More information and the application process can be found online at:
https://www.calcareers.ca.gov/CalHrPublic/Jobs/JobPosting.aspx?JobControlId=142933 and you can contact John Gerlach for more details. His description and contact information are below. The application period closes on 02/22/2019.
“We have an entry-level grant manager position in DPR’s research and outreach grant program. The grant proposals that our group funds are designed to reduce pesticide risks to us and to our environment. Our projects have been in settings
as diverse as pre-schools, affordable housing, farms, ranches, and natural area preserves. Each grant manager is considered to be a peer of the grantee and, in the case of our outreach grants, is an active participant in the grant project. No, you won’t be
actively doing science for the most part but, occasionally, DPR has funding for contracts and you could. You will likely be asked to occasionally contribute to other high priority work. Yes, and sometimes some highly mundane work too – it is a job.
“You would like to work in our program, and we would love to welcome you aboard, if you have technical training and experience in a pest management or other applied fields such as entomology, ecology, forestry, urban pest control, or many
other similar fields. Weeds, insects, diseases, and vertebrate pests are all fair game. You should also have experience managing projects – people, schedules, and money. Basic proficiency with typical software programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and browsers
is a must and you’d stand out from the crowd if you knew R and had some training and actual experience in statistics and experimental design. Especially prized are human beings with people skills who can communicate technical subjects in writing and in sound
to a general audience - meaning our bosses. This is not one of those jobs where lots of things are going a mile a minute so multitasking at light speed isn’t a requirement. But … you will be required, and pushed, to always think strategically, learn and learn
more, adapt, and implement.”
