Re: [BAA Comets] Fragmentation of C/2025 K1 (ATLAS)

Happy New Year to all. I hope you had a good Christmas.
Fragmenting comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) has been relatively stable for the
past few weeks with two fragments visible. Leading fragment A is fainter
and trailing fragment C is brightest. This image by Denis Buczynski
taken on Christmas night shows the situation:
https://britastro.org/cometobs/2025k1/2025k1_20251225_2200_dgb.html
The comet is quite faint now and the Moon makes the sky very bright so
imaging it is a challenge. Nick Quinn observed the comet last night (Dec
30.8) and his images appear to show a new component behind C. I've
imaged the comet tonight (Dec 31.8) and there is nothing obvious in my
40x60s stack however component C appears significantly elongated. This
image is 4.8 x 2.4 arcmin, N up.
If you get a chance to image this comet please go as deep as you can so
that we can continue tracking its activity into the new year.
Nick.
