Bright comet update Jonathan Shanklin - BAS 15 Oct 2025 09:46 UTC

I usually only update the current comet magnitudes etc on the comet visual observations page https://people.ast.cam.ac.uk/~jds/ at the beginning of each month, but as there are two bright comets around I've made an interim update.

2025 A6 remains on track to become a naked eye object of around 4th magnitude and is certainly easy to spot in binoculars despite the bright moonlight, if only the anticyclonic cloud would disperse. Despite some claims there is no evidence (yet) for any fragmentation.

2025 R2 is near its peak brightness and is likely to start fading rapidly. It should be an easy object of around 6th magnitude in the early evening sky, but for me the early evenings have been totally clouded out since it came into view.

2024 E1 is approaching conjunction and although it could reach around 7th magnitude at perihelion it is then at a southern declination.

2025 K1 and 3I are currently at a poor elongation for observation. The elongation of the former is rapidly increasing and it should become observable towards the end of the month, although will be fading. It may however be brighter than expected. We will have to wait until late November for a chance to see interstellar comet 3I.

There have been a few electronic observations of 24P/ posted in COBS, which seems to be some 4 magnitudes fainter than expected. It usually brightens fairly rapidly.

I have added a new table of approximate orbit plane crossing dates to the web page. Deeper imaging around the time of crossing may reveal the dust in the plane of the orbit.
