(SECOND HALF OF) JULY 2014 VISIT TO THE U.K. (LONDON & BRISTOL) FOR COMET HISTORY AND COMET HUNTERS-DISCOVERERS BIOGRAPHIES AND TO PLAN TO PRODUCE A DOCUMENTARY FILM DAY 1-4 Arrival at London. Soaking in the freshness of the new land; surreal it was! General stay otherwise these days. Attended the BAA's meet dedicated to the (late) Sir Patrick Moore. The meet was in one of the UCL buildings (right?). Met a few BAA Comet members, during the break, in person, whose name had heard and their works seen only online. I acquired the George Alcock DVD which was purchased in advance with Mr. Hurst. Dr. Allan Chapman FRAS also spoke, and after the meet I even walked him to his mode of transport a bit away from the venue. He did have a smile on him when I mentioned I'm there for British comet history. DAY 5 The day was spent at the Royal Observatory Greenwich and Museum (and the Peter Harrison Planetarium). Mr. Mike Meynell, the Vice-Chair of the Flamsteed Astronomy Society, was kind enough to host me for the day showing around the historic site (he had reserved his time for me from before my travel). I looked for traces of the word "comet" on the plaques and boards on display through the site, and even asked him if I could find anything more, knowing there was some comet connection with the Observatory. DAY 6 A visit to the Burlington House and the RAS Building & Library. It was a privilege to write my name in the entry register at the door. The "reader registration" form submitted to the Librarian & Archivist mentions the date as July 15, 2014, of this day. Thanks to Dr. Sian Prosser, Librarian & Archivist, I could 'touch' Caroline Herschel's original comet notes. Wrote my notes of the wordings from the letters. DAY 7 A second visit to the RAS Library was made to search through the records there on comet literature. I found out about Dr. Robert Massey, the-then Deputy Executive Secretary of RAS, and decided to walk up one or two floors above to his office, and asked about any possibility of the RAS towards making of a documentary film on comet amateurs especially the elder ones. The result was not as easy as expected, it did not seem plausible for the body (RAS) to undertake such a task The same day I had a bus to Bristol to meet the senior duo filmmakers based in that city. Mr. Peter Jones and Mr. Nigel Ashcroft from Green Umbrella Productions at Bristol (the former who had served at the BBC for a good tenure of his profession, the latter who had made many naturalist documentaries for them). This team was the film maker of the documentary 'Seeing in the Dark' by Dr. Timothy Ferris (USA). I was provided hospitality for the stay at Mr. Jones' house! The action on comets had begun. Upon being received by Mr. Ashcroft, after reaching their house, the first thing I asked him is "Can we see William Denning's house?!". I insisted we go. And right after that we did! I could not forget the address "44 Egerton Rd.". We traced the house. (You can find it on google maps) With my host Mr. Ashcroft, initially we were hesitant, but we rang the doorbell to find out who the-then present-day owner staying in Denning's house was! He gladly spoke about the legacy of that property and knew the legendary astronomer stayed there; he only mentioned he was looking for some old documents related to the site, and would share it (with me) once he retrieved it (never happened to get a chance to get back to him on that, did not have his contact details). Only because Denning played cricket at the Gloucestershire County Cricket Club (in the present-day based at The Bristol Pavilion), which was near his house, we (host & me) drove up to the gate of the cricket club to have a look at it (least interested in cricket myself). DAY 8 The day of the meet with the senior duo at Mr. Jones' house, on finding funding (most probably BBC or some scientific body like the STFC) and making the documentary film on all amateur / visual comet hunters & discoverers. My particular attention or focus was especially on the veteran ones who were waning in age, to capture them first. I had already prepared a detailed 25 page outline of the script covering literally every single amateur and professional comet hunter-discoverer. [This project didn't materialize, that is another thing]. DAY 9 A visit to the Herschel House and Museum at Bath with Mr. Ashcroft. Taken by my host, an evening visit to the Bristol Astronomical Society (near Bristol Grammar School). A talk was on John Dobson. I even wished to give (but did not happen) a ppt talk on amateur comet hunters & discoverers, the content which had become my verbal script during that period. Mr. Ashcroft announced in the meet that we both had made a visit to the legendary Denning's house. DAY 10-11 Return to London. Depart UK.
