Using an unapproved phone app (e.g., Google Translate) in the classroom to caption and/or translate conversations can cause a lot of issues - you're potentially sending a recording of everything being said to others which goes against student privacy laws. As a result of this, most school districts these days, including those in NY, now have an approval process where software gets vetted. For captioning, translation and note-taking, the NY Dept of Ed recently approved www.streamer.center, which runs on pretty much any platform including iPads, Chromebooks and phones.

Good morning!
We are facing a statewide cell phone ban in the schools in New York, and in a school district with many ELL students, we are looking for a workaround for them since they will no longer be able to use their phone during the school day to translate text and spoken language. Does anyone have experience with any portable translation devices? I know there are many on the market but thought I would ask the brilliant people on this list to get some vetted information. I will happily take any other suggestions that can help our students.
